The Dispatch

On April 17, 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted to X that passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz was declared completely open for the remaining period of the ceasefire, in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon. He stated that ships could move on the coordinated route as already announced by Iranian authorities.

At 9:06 AM on the same day, President Donald J. Trump posted to Truth Social: “IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE. THANK YOU!”

The waterway is named the Strait of Hormuz. It has been named the Strait of Hormuz since the sixteenth century, after the historic port city of Hormuz on its northern shore. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s seaborne oil passes through it. Iran announced it open. The President thanked Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the Strait of Hormuz.
